Highlights from the Public Event of the HSGTRM: Stem Cell Therapies for Neurodegenerative Diseases Scientific Achievements – Clinical Applications – Ethical Issues

by Nikos Kokkorakis

The very interesting event of the Hellenic Society of Gene Therapy and Regenerative Medicine (HSGTRM), supported by the Hellenic Pasteur Institute, has come to an end. At the welcoming Academy of Athens, very interesting approaches for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases were presented, along with the advances made in stem cell technology. The distinguished scientists Dr. Lorenz Studer (Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, USA, BlueRock Therapeutics) and Dr. Achilles Gravanis (Professor of Pharmacology, University of Crete) clearly analyzed the potential that stem cell technology offers for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. There was a large turnout, with teachers, students, and other interested individuals who wanted to learn about the latest developments in biomedical technology for the stem cell-based treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, which are affecting society more than ever today. This event could not have been carried out so successfully without the pivotal presence and coordination of Dr. Rebecca Matsas, President of the HSGTRM, and Dr. Ioanna Soufleri, Editor-in-Chief of “VIMA Science.”
