Mesenchymal-stromal cells in the treatment of liver diseases

by Nikos Kokkorakis

Two interesting scientific studies, conducted under the leadership of the Professor of School of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Dr. Maria Roubelakis, were published in reputable journals and concern the cellular therapy of alcoholic and non-alcoholic liver disease, through mesenchymal-stromal cells. These scientific articles highlight the therapeutic applications of mesenchymal cells in the restoration of liver function and the reduction of inflammation and fibrosis, either through their transplantation or through secreted exosomes from them. Regarding exosomes secreted by mesenchymal-stromal cells, a very interesting review article by Dr. Roubelakis’ group highlights the regenerative potential mesenchymal-stromal cells possess in relation to the treatment of liver diseases.
