Our History

Hellenic Society of Gene Therapy and Regenerative Medicine has been established to support scientists and clinicians involved with basic and translational research on Gene and Cell Therapy and Regenerative Medicine (GCTRM) in Greece. Although, therapeutic modalities related to allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantations have long been established current research is mainly focused on basic science and pre-clinical studies.
Thus, there was a compelling need for the establishment of a Scientific Society in Greece that can support these activities, been proactive in facilitating scientific exchange, disseminating knowledge and increasing the awareness of gene and cell therapy among scientists and also promote interactions with other societies, funding organizations and regulatory bodies. More importantly, such a scientific entity can define scientific principles and provide guidance for the development and evaluation of Gene and Cell therapy medicinal products intended for use in humans.

In the fall of 2013, after long discussions mainly between hematologists and biologists working in the field of Gene and Cell therapy (G. Stamatoyannopoulos, A. Athanasiadou, N. Anagnou, G. Vassilopoulos, E.Yannaki, and A. Anagnostopoulos), Achilles Anagnostopoulos took the initiative to coordinate the procedures for establishing the Hellenic Society of Gene Therapy and Regenerative Medicine. For finalizing the Articles of Association, fruitful discussions and valuable interactions between the founding members took place. Professor George Stamatoyannopoulos, founding leader of the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy, acted as a key person for finalizing the articles of association, transferring his vast experience and knowledge in the field. Finally, the General Assembly Committee was held in Volos in June 29th, 2014.
